Curing Colic with Dr Browns Bottles: Junes Top Tester Stacey shares her story with MBM.
Stacey Turnbull from Fleet, Hampshire is Mum to Amelie (2 years, 10 months) and Isla (7 weeks). Stacey first started using Dr Brown’s bottles when her eldest daughter, Amelie developed colic at three weeks of age. Stacey told MBM that she had tried all the ‘tried and tested’ methods of relieving colic and had bought almost every colic relief product available upon the market to no avail. After only a few days Stacey found that her daughter’s colic subsided and after only one month had completely disappeared.
Dr Brown’s Anti- Colic Bottles are suitable from Birth onwards, available from a wide range of supermarkets and chemists (£5.79 for 120ml Bottles or £5.99 for 240ml Bottles). The Dr Brown’s Starter Kit comes complete with 1 x 120ml and 2 x 240ml bottles, 2 x stage 2 teats and 3 x stage 1 teats, therefore saving money. The Bottles come complete with a mini bottle washer and sealant caps to prevent the bottles from leaking.![]()
The Dr Brown’s Anti- Colic Bottles use a anti-colic vent system which prevents babies from taking in air during feeding thus reducing potential wind which can be painful for infants. The reduction of wind therefore prevents colic from developing.
The Dr Brown’s Anti-Colic Bottles are long-lasting and extremely durable, there are a large variety of teats available for the bottles (stage 1, stage 2, thicker liquid teats etc) thus enabling bottles to be used for a long period of time whilst your baby grows.
The Dr Brown’s Bottles easily fit into a variety of different sterilisers, Stacey explained to MBM that she has used these bottles in both the Tommee Tippee Steam Steriliser and the Advent Steriliser.
When asked, Stacey told MBM that the only downside to this product is that when put into very hot water, or when put in a highly pressurised environment such as an aircraft cabin, these bottles can sometimes leak. This can however be combated by removing the air vent system until required.
Stacey swears that the Dr Brown’s Anti-Colic Bottles were a Godsend for both herself and her husband as they were able to get some sleep during the early hours of the morning. When Isla, Stacey’s second child was born Stacey and her partner chose to use the Dr Brown’s Anti Colic Bottles straight away as they felt that these bottles had changed their lives immeasurably during the time that they used the bottles with Amelie, they would therefore no risk using any other brand.
Although the Dr Brown’s Anti Colic Bottles can seem pricey in comparison to other bottles available upon the market, they are well worth the cost. Stacey recommends these bottles to all Mothers who have babies that are bottle fed and suffer from colic.
MBM would like to thank Stacey for sharing her opinions and time with MBM. The Dr Brown’s Starter Kit and Bottles featured in this article are available for very reasonable prices from www.boots.co.uk
Put the Kettle on! MBM Top Tip for formula feeding Mums
If you are a bottle feeding Mum then you will know how irritating it is having to run your bottle under cold water/ sit it in cold water or generally wait for it to cool whilst your baby impatiently cries.
Avoid the tears and tantrums by making sure that at the end of every night and each morning you fill up the kettle (to the max) and put it on boil. This way you are certain to have enough cool boiled water first thing and throughout the day!
Sweet Dreams: Dream Feeding
Many babies find it difficult to sleep ‘right through’ the night, it can takes weeks, months or even over a year to establish a set sleeping pattern for your baby.
In order to increase your chances of a good nights sleep why not try ‘dream feeding’.
What is Dream Feeding?
Dream feeding is a technique of feeding and winding baby during their sleep.
How do I do a Dream feed?
Carefully put your baby into your arms while they sleep trying not to wake them. If you bottle feed prepare a warm bottle beforehand (test temperature to ensure you do not scold your baby!). Offer your baby the breast/ bottle as they sleep. If baby does not open their mouth gently stroke their chin and encourage them to ‘open up’.
Your baby may wake ever so slightly, However if they were in a deep enough sleep they will continue to suckle whilst snoozing! If your baby stops suckling try pulling the teet/ breast away from their mouth slowly, they should respond by sucking if they wish to continue with the feed.
It is essential that you wind your baby after any feed to relieve wind/ colic and to reduce the chance of choking upon milk. To wind a baby after a dream feed simply rub their backs and rock them side to side and forwards to back gently.
If you wish to change your baby before/ after feeding this is also possible but it is advised that you use a darkened room and make gentle movements when removing their nappy in order to avoid waking baby.
How is Dream feeding effective?
Babies sleep better when they have a full tummy and are less likely to wake to ask for food. Dream Feeding illuminates the need for baby to wake for food and encourages a longer sleep pattern.

A simple formula to feeding baby when out and about: Bibi Formula Container
Formula feeding doesn’t necessarily need to be complicated! We are now guided to ensure that our babies milk is disposed of within two hours, this can be rather daunting when travelling with a baby.
However, Bibi have created the ideal solution to dividing the correct amount of formula into sterile compartments to make bottles up ‘on the go’.
Each container simply screws to the next and the lid itself becomes a funnel for putting the formula into your bottles.
TOP TIP: Keep each compartment in your Bibi container filled with the correct amount required for a regular feed and use it during the night when you may not be concentrating fully upon counting the scoops required!
FORMULA WHICH HAS BEEN OPENED MUST BE USED WITHIN A MONTH: Remember to keep your Bibi container filled with fresh formula to prevent your baby from becoming ill.
