Kate Lyons (currently 38 weeks pregnant), producer of the Vanessa Feltz Radio Show counts down to her due date!
Kate Lyons, 29 from Highgate, North London is now approaching week 38 of her pregnancy with her first child, due to be born at the end of this month. Kate is the producer for Vanessa Feltz’s Radio Show which is on during midmorning on BBC London 94.9 FM.
Week 38
How long is it until your due date?
2 weeks and 4 days left!
Have you had any new symptoms since we last spoke?
No just more backache still and lots of Braxton hicks!
Have you got any last minute jobs to get done before baby arrives?
Clean the fridge, oven and sort my wardrobe out. These are jobs I’ve been meaning to do for ages. Now I have a couple of weeks left before the baby arrives I can get them done!
How was your final day at work?
It was very emotional. I was really busy in the morning sorting the show out so i didn’t have much time to think about it but when i realised it was 11.50 and the show was nearly over it suddenly hit me that I was leaving to have a baby! Vanessa said a lovely goodbye to me on air just before we finished. I’m really going to miss her and the team so much. I’m sure they’ll all come and visit and I’ll be taking baby Lyons to the office to meet everyone.
Did you celebrate the beginning of your maternity leave?
I had a sip of champagne in the evening with Joe to celebrate. I can’t wait until i can enjoy a whole glass!
What do you plan to do in the time leading up to your due date?
Well I actually have a very busy first week off. Other than finishing my list of jobs to do in the house, I’m having my hair done (i don’t want terrible roots in my post labour pictures!) meeting my friends new baby (she had him this morning!) and meeting up with some friends for lunch. I also have a pregnancy massage booked at a spa.
How frequently are you experiencing Braxton Hicks?
Loads every day. I’ve got so used to them now. I’ve been having them all through out my pregnancy. I asked my GP and midwife if its usual and they both said “yes”.
How is your hospital bag packing coming along?
It’s pretty much packed. I have the baby clothes, nappies, muslin squares, bottles and cotton wool all packed. I’ve packed my bikini (for the pool!) and some going home clothes for me. I still need to buy some snacks and some drinks then I’m done!
Have you had a tour around the hospital?
Yes I’ve visited the birthing centre several times. I have my assessment next week as need to see if I’m well enough to give birth there as its mid-wife led only. The rooms in the birthing centre are huge with big double beds and a huge birthing pools in so I really hope everything goes to plan and I give birth there.
Now that you have your pram, have you been practicing?
Yes we put it all together the second it arrived….well Joe did actually and i watched. We’ve practised collapsing it and fitting it in the boot of the car. I can’t wait to start using it!
What are you looking forward to the most at this point?
I’m looking forward to sleeping and reading a few books before the baby arrives.
Are you getting nervous at all?
A little as i don’t know what to expect and when to expect it but I’m very excited to meet my baby.
Have you put any of the ‘old wives tales’ to the test in terms of inducing labour?
Not yet but i was thinking i might buy some raspberry leaf tea today. I’ve heard it doesn’t taste the best though so I’m not sure how many cups I’ll get through!
How are you sleeping?
I wake up several times during the night needing trips to the bathroom! Also the baby wakes me up with lots of kicking. If i roll on my side and he/she doesn’t like it I’ll soon know about it!
Is all ‘swell’?
Only my hands at night when i get hot. I’ve had to take my rings off now in case they get stuck. I’ve heard horror stories about women having to have theirs cut off!
How are babies movements?
The baby is still moving all the time. There isn’t much room in there now so I’m really feeling every single movement.
How is your hubby doing?
He’s really excited about meeting our son or daughter. He’s looked after me so well. He’s been doing the washing and cooking and cleaned the whole house for me the other day! I’ve trained him well.
Mums Baby Magazine would like to thank Kate for her time and wish her a pleasant maternity leave. We will be catching up with Kate shortly and keeping you updated with all the latest news upon the arrival of Kate and Joes beautiful bump.
Kate Lyons (currently 34 weeks pregnant), producer of the Vanessa Feltz Radio Show updates us on her pregnancy progress.
Kate Lyons, 29 from Highgate, North London is now thirty four weeks and two days pregnant with her first child, due to be born in late July this year. Kate is the producer for Vanessa Feltz’s Radio Show which is on during midmorning on BBC London 94.9 FM.
Week 34
How many weeks of pregnancy have you got remaining?
Five weeks and five days left and still counting!
What pregnancy symptoms have you had during this month?
I’ve been getting quite a bad pelvic pain over the last month. It happens at night when I’m in bed and when I walk. I’ve been to physiotherapy and have been doing exercises so hopefully it’ll start getting better soon.
Are you loving your bump or now desperate to have your baby?
I do love my bump but it’s getting harder and harder do to things. Everything feels like such an effort. Even getting up from the sofa is a struggle so I’d quite like to feel normal again soon.
How do you feel about your appearance now?
I do feel huge! I think I’ve probably put on about two stone which I know is about average but not having a waist and not being able to get into my skinny jeans is hard! I’m living in maternity leggings and jogging bottoms at the moment and think I will continue to do so until I give birth.
Would you say your babies movements have decreased or increased since we last spoke?
The baby has always been active but the bigger I’m getting the harder the kicks are. The movements have certainly not decreased! I’ve been filming my tummy quite a bit and watching it back is very funny. You can easily make out body parts now.
Has your bump ‘dropped’ yet?
No, it’s still really high. I’m guessing that my bump will start to drop in the next week or so though.
How is it to breathe now?
Yes it’s getting harder to breathe. If I’m laid down in certain positions, suddenly I’ll find I have to catch my breath. Also, early in the morning when I’m getting ready for work, I do get quite breathless. Surely that’s a good enough excuse to stop working now?
Have you had any further Braxton hicks?
Yes, I’ve been having quite a few. Now I know what they feel like I’m not as panic stricken by them. I had quite a bad bout of braxton hicks the other day and I found I had to get up and walk about for a while in order for them to stop.
Is your heart burning for your baby to arrive? In other words… have you hit the Gavison yet?
I’ve had a bit of heartburn but not so much that I’ve had to take anything for it.
Cravings? What are your latest food requirements?
Chocolate!
How is your head? Have you been experiencing any of the following: headaches, light flashes, seeing spots?
No, none thank goodness.
How have your midwife appointments been lately?
All my appointments have been fine. My last one was with my GP who told me that the baby was in the right position with the head down and its back to the left. I’ve got another check up next week which I’m looking forward to as I love my hospital visits and hearing the babies heartbeat.
How packed is that hospital bag of yours?
We made a long list of last minute hospital bag bits that we need to get. We’re heading out this weekend to buy everything we need including a nice new dressing gown and slippers for me!
How are your legs, your pelvis and your back feeling?
My legs are fine. My back and pelvis have been causing me pain though. My sister bought me a pregnancy massage so as soon as I’m off on maternity leave (3 weeks today!) I’m booking it.
How are you sleeping now?
Some nights I sleep fine but others really aren’t so good. I have tried using cushions but they never stay where they are supposed to.
What equipment have you purchased recently?
We bought a steriliser and have been given a breast pump. I’ve practically sterilised everything in the house now learning how to use it!
Has the pram arrived and have you tried it in your car boot?
All being well the pram is arriving next week. I did spend quite a long time in the shop when we ordered it, working out how to collapse it! I’m excited for it to arrive and to take it on a test run.
How is ‘babies’ room coming along?
The babies room is nearly finished. We recently bought a cot top changer and I’ve washed and ironed every single item of clothing already! We still need to get a night lamp and finish a few bits off but its looking great. It just needs a baby in it now!
What have been your latest purchases?
I’ve bought loads more muslin squares and a few more baby outfits. I still need to purchase a birthing ball to bounce on and some raspberry leaf tea to help bring on the labour. I’ve heard it doesn’t taste great though.
How is your partner coping?
Joe is coping really well. We had our NCT classes last weekend which were fantastic. We learnt so much about giving birth and taking the baby home and I think it was really beneficial for Joe. He now knows exactly what to do when my waters break and how to change a nappy.
Where have you been out lately? How has it been?
We were down in Devon two weeks ago for my best friends wedding. I was a big, pregnant bridesmaid! The wedding was fantastic but I did feel tired the following week. It was funny to watch everyone getting drunk! Joe and I also went to see Shrek the musical this week which was brilliant but I did get quite uncomfortable in the small seats half way through the show!
Are you having/ have you had a Baby Shower?
My lovely kind friend Charlie is organising me a baby shower for the 2nd July. It’ll be at my flat with a few close friends and family members. They’ll be lots of tea, cake, champagne and games! I’ll let you know how it went in the next update.
Have you had any feelings as to boys and girls?
Well Joe and Charlie both think its a girl but my parents think its a boy. In all honesty I really don’t have a clue! We finally have names for both genders though and as long as its a healthy baby we don’t mind. I’m really looking forward to meeting ‘it’ now.
Mums Baby Magazine would like to thank Kate for her time and wish her well in the last few weeks of her pregnancy journey. We will be catching up with Kate shortly and keeping you updated with all the latest news upon the arrival of Kate and Joes beautiful bump.
Kate Lyons (currently 30 weeks pregnant), producer of the Vanessa Feltz Radio Show updates us on her pregnancy progress.
Kate Lyons, 29 from Highgate, North London is now thirty weeks pregnant with her first child, due to be born in late July this year. Kate is the producer for Vanessa Feltz’s Radio Show which is on during midmorning on BBC London 94.9 FM.
Week 30
How many weeks pregnant are you now?
I’m now thirty weeks into my pregnancy, the last few weeks have flown by!
What symptoms have you had during this past month?
I’ve started to get breathless in the morning when I’m busy getting ready for work. Also, I’m getting heartburn now which isn’t nice. I’ve been told to drink milk before bed to help stop it but I’m not a huge milk fan.
How much has your body changed during the last month?
My shape has really changed now. In the last few weeks I’ve noticed that I’ve started filling out at the sides! It’s getting harder to bend down and get up from the sofa in the evenings.
Have you got any stretch marks yet?
None as of yet! I’m still slapping on the cream everyday. I’ve gone so many bottles already. I’m sure they’ll appear soon though…I hear they are unavoidable.
Have you had any new cravings for food/ drinks?
I’m craving sparkling water quite a bit (which I guess isn’t a bad thing) and ham sandwiches often pop into my head but mostly it’s just any food. I’m still cramming in my ‘five a day’ but eating more carbohydrates and sugar than I did before I was pregnant.
Are you feeling nervous now the big day is beginning to get a little closer?
I’m nervous now I only have seven weeks left at work. It feels surreal that I’ll be leaving BBC London for at least nine months. I’m so excited to meet the little person inside of me, I’m not that nervous about the actual birth at the moment. I want to try and stay calm and put all my pregnancy yoga exercises to good use.
What else have you done since we last spoke in terms of planning for the arrival?
We have still got to buy the buggy and pack my hospital bag but we’re quite organised other than that. The nursery is almost finished and I bought the steriliser, bottle warmer and bottles last weekend along with MORE clothes. Our friends and family have given us things like baby slings and car seats so we’ve been really lucky.
How did you celebrate the Royal Wedding?
I was producing The Vanessa Feltz show down at Hyde Park. It was the biggest Royal Wedding Party with over 40,000 people there. It such a fantastic experience! Vanessa and the team were broadcasting live from the top of a big red bus looking across the whole of the park. The crowd were able to watch the wedding on a big screen and just after the newlyweds left the church, several huge confetti cannons were left off which was an amazing sight. I wouldn’t have wanted to watch it anywhere else.
What did you think of Catherine’s dress? (we know it’s not pregnancy related but we all watched it didn’t we?)
Her dress was just stunning. When we saw Kate for the first time getting into the car with her father the majority of the ladies around me shed a tear or two! I was still looking at the pictures for days after.
Have you had any appointments recently? If so how did they go and what happened?
Early on in my pregnancy I found out that my blood type is rhesus negative so I have had to have Anti D injections at twenty eight weeks. I have also had to have blood tests to check my iron levels which were actually very low so I’m now taking Ferrous Sulphate twice a day.
How are your feet? Are you still able to wear high heels or are you now in comfy shoes?
My feet have been fine. They haven’t swollen yet and I can still get into my heels….although I can’t actually walk very far in them .
Have you added any further items to your maternity wardrobe?
I’ve got a lovely pair of jeans from Mamas & Papas which I tend to live in when I’m at home. I have also bought a few maternity vests from Topshop and H&M but I really haven’t bought very much for me at all. Every time I go shopping I just want to buy baby bits!
Have you made a decision now upon the pram? If so which one and when are you getting this?
Yes we’re getting the Bugaboo Cameleon in dark blue. Although it seams that every Mum in North London has one, we’ve done quite a bit of research and think it’s the best travel system for us. We’ve already got the Maxi Cosi car seat and the Isofix from a friend so that’s all ready to put into the car in the next few weeks.
Have you tried any of the ‘old wifes’ methods to find out the gender of your bump?
Yes we’ve tried attaching my wedding ring to a piece of string and dangling the ring over my tummy but the outcome is different every time we try it. I have looked at quite a few old wives tales on the internet and some are very far fetched!
How is your hair? Have you found that it is growing quicker and is thicker?
My hair has always grown pretty quickly but during my second trimester is did get a lot thicker. My hairdresser told me that won’t last though and some will begin to fall out when I’ve had the baby!
How are the babies movements now?
The baby doesn’t stop moving! It wakes me up quite a bit in the night especially if I turn onto my side. I can feel little feet kicking my ribs telling me to turn back round. Also as soon as I’ve eaten and lay back on the sofa the baby becomes very active. We can sometimes work out which part of its body is where. It’s such a great feeling but can hurt a bit too.
Are you managing to sleep throughout the night?
No! I can’t remember the last time I had a good night sleep. It takes so long to get comfortable and then once I am I need to get up to go to the bathroom..again!
Have you made use of any particular maternity products?
My friend gave me two bump bands which I love. I’m using them all the time. They’re comfortable and fit so well. I’m yet to buy a pregnancy pillow but I think I may well have to invest in one soon to help me sleep.
How do you feel with your bump? If someone mentions it what is your reaction?
I absolutely love my bump (even though it feels like it’s getting bigger every second). Lots of people, some I don’t even know very well, want to touch my tummy but I actually don’t mind at all. It must be a natural reaction people have when they see pregnant women. Once I give birth I think it’ll feel odd not to have a bump anymore. One of my friends has just had her baby and says she misses feeling her baby kick.
How are you emotionally? Can you make it through a soppy movie without tissues?
I’ve generally been ok emotionally but there have been a couple of occasions where I’ve felt I wanted to cry for no reason at all. I’m sure once the baby has arrived I’ll be an emotional wreck and won’t be able to sit through an episode of Eastenders!
Have you had any Braxton Hicks yet?
Yes! Last weekend. I was away for my friend Anna’s hen weekend in Bath. All the hens were out having fun in a bar when I suddenly didn’t feel well. I went back to the house we were staying in along with another friend to go to sleep. Before I knew it I’d been sick and was having heart palpitations. The girls called an ambulance and I was taken to hospital. I started having contractions which lasted for about an hour. The team at the hospital were great and monitored me until they had stopped. They said it was just Braxton Hicks. Needless-to-say, I won’t be going on anymore hen weekends before July!
Have you considered having a 3D/4D scan?
Yes, We’ve been talking about it quite a bit. They are expensive but I hear they are totally worth it. My friends sister is due a few weeks before me and just had a 4D scan. They brought the DVD home for all the family to watch. It must be wonderful to be able to see your baby so clearly inside you.
How are you coming along with your birth plan?
I’m hoping to give birth in the birthing centre at the Whittington Hospital. The rooms are more like hotels with big double beds and TV’s on the wall. They also have large birthing pools in the rooms too which is really where I’d like spend most of my labour. The birthing centre is midwife lead though so if I want an epidural or need to see a doctor I’ll have to head up to the labour ward. I’m not ruling out an epidural. I think I’ll wait and see what my pain threshold is like!
Mums Baby Magazine would like to thank Kate for her time and wish her well in her pregnancy. We will be catching up with Kate shortly and keeping you updated with the latest on her pregnancy journey.
Kate Lyons (currently 24 weeks and 6 days pregnant), producer of the Vanessa Feltz Radio Show updates us on her pregnancy progress.
Kate Lyons, 29 from Highgate, North London is now twenty four weeks and six days pregnant (not that she’s counting!) with her first child, due to be born in late July this year. Kate is the producer for Vanessa Feltz’s Radio Show which is on during midmorning on BBC London 94.9 FM.
Week 24+6
Have you had any midwife appointments/ scans since we last spoke?
I’ve had all my scans now but I have another appointment next week with the midwife. Its on my Mum’s Birthday so she’s coming along with us to hear the baby’s heartbeat. Hopefully it’ll be a nice birthday present for her!
Have you joined any aqua natal/ prenatal classes?
I’ve not joined aqua natal but I have started pregnancy yoga. Its nice to meet other Mums-to-be and learn lots of different breathing techniques. I’m also about to book an NCT course for myself and my husband Joe. They help build a network of support with other local Mums and Dads and come highly recommended by lots of friends.
What are your plans for Easter?
This Easter we’re hoping both the families will come to our house for lunch (Joe is cooking!) I think they’ll be about ten of us altogether, so it’ll be pretty busy!
Have you done any more baby shopping?
We recently bought a new white Moses Basket, It’s so adorable, I can’t stop looking at it.
How is the nursery coming along now?
We’re slowly buying bits and bobs for the nursery. We still need to get the curtains, cot and a few little accessories. We’re keeping it quite simple and everything is either white or cream.
How does it feel knowing that it really isn’t long until being a parent?
It’s pretty scary! It still feels like a long time to go but I’m sure July will come round so quickly. I’ve always wanted to be a Mum though and I can’t wait to meet baby Lyons!
How many books have you read upon babies, birth and so on?
When we first found out I was pregnant Joe bought me ‘Conception, Pregnancy and Birth’ by Dr Miriam Stoppard. It’s really helpful, this particular book gives you a month-by-month development guide and lots of great advice. I’ve also been reading Baby London magazine which has lots of good ideas for decorating the nursery and where to buy cute clothes. I could end up spending a small fortune.
You can now follow your pregnancy week by week by clicking on the ‘Pregnancy Tab’ at www.mumsbabymagazine!
How is your wardrobe looking? It’s getting hotter weather and with a bump you no doubt have had to alter your maternity clothes.
I bought a lovely maternity top from Topshop the other day but that’s all. It really is time to buy some new maternity jeans now though as I don’t think I can squeeze into my normal jeans for much longer! They look like leggings on me and are held together with a hair band.
Do you have a holiday planned before the baby arrives?
We’ve actually just come back from Gran Canaria. We thought we’d have one last week away on our own. We didn’t do much but sleep, eat and sunbathe.
How are you feeling in yourself?
I’m feeling really well still except I’m suffering with backache now which seems to be getting worse each week. I know at the Whittington Hospital they offer free acupuncture to pregnant women so hopefully my midwife will refer me when I visit next week.
How are the babies movements now? Are you managing to sleep at night?
The baby moves all the time. The punches and kicks get stronger and stronger each day. It really is the most fantastic feeling. Sometimes I can make out where the head and feet are. I’ve just started to have sleepless nights. It takes so long to get comfortable then as soon as I’m about to drop off I get kicked in the ribs. It’s all good preparation for when the baby arrives though I guess!
Any cravings yet?
No specific cravings but Joe asked me the other day what I’d like as my first dinner once the baby has arrived. It would have to be some brie cheese with cured ham, Two things I’ve really missed!
Have you started using a body butter/ oil for stretch marks?
Yes! I started in week one! I’ve already gone through two bottles of cream and one big bottle of oil.
Do you have any stretch marks yet?
None yet but I think now is the time they start to show. I’m sure in another few weeks it’ll be a different story.
Have you looked at purchasing the pram yet?
We’ve looked at the Bugaboo, Quinny and icandy. They all meets our needs in different ways so it’s quite hard to choose. I never thought buying a pram could be so difficult!
Crib/ Moses basket which one will you opt for?
We’ve already got the beautiful Moses basket.
Have you got a nappy plan? (cloth/ disposable)
Definitely disposable!
How many baby related apps do you now own on your phone?
None yet but I’m sure I’ll have a few by the time baby comes along. Lots of my other mummy friends use theirs all the time.
We will catching up with Kate shortly and keeping you updated with the latest on her pregnancy journey
Kate Lyon (currently 20 weeks pregnant), producer of the Vanessa Feltz Radio Show updates us on her pregnancy progress.
Kate Lyons, 29 from Highgate, North London is now twenty weeks pregnant with her first child, due to be born in late July this year. Kate is the producer for Vanessa Feltz’s Radio Show which is on during midmorning on BBC London 94.9 FM.
Have you had any new symptoms over the past few weeks?
I haven’t had any new symptoms….my hair does feel much thicker though which is great!
How often do you feel your baby move?
Over the last week or so the baby has started moving lots. I keep calling my husband to come and feel it but by the time he’s there the baby has stopped moving!
How does it feel when you feel movement?
The movement feels so lovely. At first I wasn’t too sure if it was the baby but the harder the kicks come the more I’m sure it is! Sometimes it feels like the baby rises right to the surface of my skin and I can actually make out the whole shape of its body! It is very strange but an amazing experience.
Have you been reading/ singing to your bump?
Just before the twenty week scan I was singing to my baby bump in the bath! I’m not sure whether he/she liked it very much though as it didn’t stop moving for about ten minutes afterwards. Joe, my husband has been talking and singing to our bump lately. He was a bit shy at first but not anymore. Luckily he’s got a better singing voice than me.
Have you considered doing a belly cast?
No…what is a bump cast?
Are you planning to have a baby shower?
Well I wasn’t but my friend Charlie is insisting that I have one. I think she just wants to eat cupcakes and drink champagne! She’s kindly said that she would arrange one for me in June.
When do you plan to start packing a bag?
The bag will be packed and ready to go four weeks before the due date. We’ve already done a timed practice run to the hospital. It only takes three minutes to get there by car.
Have you considered the nursery yet? How is it coming along?
We’ve looked at lots of cots and we’re going to buy a white one so that it’ll match everything. I’ve also seen a lovely patchwork blind and matching lampshade that I love. Its yellow, blue, green and pink (not too pink though!) so it’ll work for a girl or a boy. I’ve also got lots of lemon coloured bunting left over from our wedding that will look lovely in the nursery. That’s the plan so far but when we get round to doing it is another story.
Were you tempted to or did you find out the gender of your child at the twenty week scan?
Joe and I decided right from the start that we were not going to find out the sex of our baby. However, when the sonographer asked if we wanted to know we were a tiny bit tempted. We were good though and stuck to our plan. It felt very strange to leave the room knowing that someone knows the sex of our baby and we don’t!
The scan was amazing. The baby was moving round a lot so it was quite hard to get a good picture at first. We saw the spine really close up and the heart and brain when the sonographer was checking for any problems. They baby is fine. It wonderful to see it again in more detail. I didn’t want to leave the room!
Have you had any new cravings?
I haven’t had any major cravings…I just feel hungry all of the time.
Have you gone off any foods?
Nope, none!
Are you missing any foods that you aren’t allowed?
I do miss soft cheese especially when Joe tucks into a cheese board on a Sunday evening. I didn’t used to be a huge cheese fan but when you’re not allowed something you want it even more!
Have you had a drink at all?
I’ve had a couple of sips of red wine but to be honest I haven’t fancied any.
Do you miss drinking?
I thought I was going to miss drinking, especially after work in the evening but I haven’t at all. I think I’ve replaced it with food!
How has pregnancy affected your social life?
This weekend I was out Friday and Saturday night and I was totally shattered by Sunday. I was dreaming of my sofa and a good movie. I’m still trying to go out and catch up with all my lovely friends as I don’t want to miss out but I know I need to take it easy too.
How are you friends finding your pregnancy?
All my friends are so excited. It great. The lucky baby will have lots of Aunties that will spoil it that’s for sure. One of my close friends is due three weeks before me which is lovely, and its her second baby so I’m asking her all sorts of questions.
How is pregnancy whilst you are working?
Its hard to get up at 5.45 am every morning but that’s nothing new! Everyone at work has been so lovely and supportive. I’ll really miss the team but can’t wait for my maternity leave to start. Three and a half months left and counting!
We will catching up with Kate shortly and keeping you updated with the latest on her pregnancy journey
