MBM Monitors Baby Monitors!

With so many different baby monitors now available on the market, it is difficult to know where to begin when choosing which Baby Monitor you should purchase. It seems every monitor available offers differing capabilities and features.

Here are some of the features you may wish to consider before purchasing a baby monitor:

  • Number of channels/ Privacy options (using wireless technology)
  • Temperature Display
  • Night Light
  • Two Way Talk Back Facility
  • Movement Sensor Mat (alerts parents when infants stop moving for certain time periods)
  • Light Display
  • Video Capability
  • Distance/ Range

At present, there are no baby monitors on the market which include all of the above features. There is however the option of purchasing two items to monitor all of the above features, these include optional Movement Sensor Mats.

MBM has researched ten of the most popular monitors currently on the market and has identified which features these monitors do/ do not have.

The Baby imageMonitor which ticked most of MBM boxes was the ‘TOMY Video Monitor’. This Monitor retails at £149.99 from www.mothercare.co.uk

Although this is the most expensive of the monitors that MBM researched, we believe that no cost is too much in comparison to the safety of our infants and children as well as the peace of mind for parents.

If you would like to review your infant/ baby monitor, then we would be happy to share your thoughts and opinions with our readers. Please email your review, along with any relevant images to review@mumsbabymagazine.com

Get a Good Nights Sleep with the Airwrap Mesh Cot Bumper

When babies start to roll it can be a worrying time, not just during the daytime but also throughout the night. When baby begins to start rolling, they may choose to sleep in differing positions just as us adults do. Whilst babies roll to get comfortable in their cot they can often bump/ bang their heads against the cot bars which can cause them to wake and become upset.

Although cot bumpers are hugely popular, often when babies are small in length/ height the cot bumpers do not physically reach babies head (whether placed around the bottom/ top of the cot) and so babies continue to catch their heads on the cot bars and continue to have nights with broken sleep. This is unhealthy for baby and disheartening as well as exhausting for parents.

Standard Cot bumpers are not designed to go right around the cot as they are thick and could cause a breathing/ choking hazard if babies were to snuggle into the bumper.

The Airwrap Mesh Cot Bumper is made from a padded, breathable mesh which has been tested for safety. The mesh allows for a maximum airflow which reduces the risk of overheating. Not only does the cot bumper keep your baby safe but it protects your infants limbs from getting between the cot bars.

If baby was to roll into the bumper the padding cushions any bangs, reducing waking due to rolling. The Airwrap Mesh Cot Bumper fits both cots and cot beds as it uses a velcro fastening which can be adjusted to fit your cot perfectly. The Airwrap Mesh Cot Bumper is easily washable and is said to help reduce the risk of climbing. The bumper is easily height adjustable and moves freely with the drop side rail of a cot.

Available from www.babyenterprise.com for £19.99 the Airwrap Mesh Cot Bumper is a sleep saver for both babies and parents!

Bag a Baby!

Slumbersac Blue Noahs Ark Baby Sleeping BagAfter having a baby, it is usually recommended for Mothers to endure a short hospital stay. During this time Midwives and medical staff suggest swaddling your baby with a sheet/ pram sheet and then covering them with a blanket which is to be tucked tightly under the mattress to ensure that your baby is safe. However, this method of putting your baby to sleep is unsafe once they are able to move their arms freely. Babies have a strong grip and are able to tug blanket and sheets over their heads which creates a ‘cot death’/ SIDS risk.

There is enough to worry about during the early days of parenthood. Battling through sleep deprivation due to feeding and changing your baby is one thing but staying awake to monitor the safety of your baby whilst they sleep can be mentally torturing. Remember, new Mums (and Dad’s) are advised to ‘sleep while baby sleeps’.

To combat the worry and risk of your baby suffocating themselves with sheets purchase a Grobag/ Baby Sleeping Bag. These come in a wide range of designs for specifically girls, specifically boys or unisex. Be  careful to ensure that you purchase the correct size for your babies age group, otherwise the bag may be too lose and therefore unsafe.

It is suggested that you buy at least three infant sleeping bags in order to maintain a rotation for washing and drying time. When purchasing your sleeping bag consider the season and temperature as there are a range of TOGS available (0.5 TOG to 2.5 TOG) and each one is appropriate for a differing temperature/ season. Even better, why not get a range of TOGs so that you are fully prepared for any weather!

Baby Club Flannelette Pram SheetsBaby Sleeping Bags have been proven to be the safest sleeping insulator for infants by FSID. It is advised that parents use sleeping bags rather than swaddling in order to reduce the risk of SIDS.

There are a wide range of manufacturers who produce infant sleeping bags, one of the most well known is Grobag. However, they may be the most well known  but they are not necessarily the cheapest. Childs Play Sussex offers a range of sleeping bags starting from £16.50 which is excellent value considering that www.grobag.com sells the equivalent from £28.99!

Bag your baby a bargain and sleep safe!

Having difficulty getting your baby to rest? Why not try the Amby Nature’s Nest…

Recommended by rainbowshine, the Amby Nature’s Nest is available from a wide range of stores retailing on average at £160.

Said to aid reflux and colic, the swinging and bouncing hammock was designed by Ambrose Hooi from Australia in order to try and imitate the cocoon like environment of the womb.

Suitable from birth onwards the nest offers children a safe environment to sleep with their heads slightly raised, although still in a safe position advised by FSID.

Babies who are born with the use of ventous or forceps often have headaches or even haematomas, quite often raising a babies head can reduce their discomfort.  Babies who suffer from reflux/ colic also find relief from having their heads raised. The nest is the perfect solution for babies who suffer with these issues.

Once your little one is able to sit up unaided the nest can be converted into a baby bouncer.

The nest is portable and easy to assemble, thus is an excellent alternative to a travel cot. However, the stand and hammock itself is said to be bulky. The nest comes with a bag to carry the package in when travelling enabling baby to sleep in their own bed wherever they are!
